After a Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans event in 2014, Tom Rose and Richard Stoker decided there was something special that they could do to honor and show appreciation and gratitude for our Veterans.
Tom, himself a Vietnam Veteran, and Richard, the son of a Vietnam Veteran, felt like they could make a difference in the lives of Veterans and the relatives and friends of Veterans.
Being a Vietnam Veteran, Tom knew from his experience that Vietnam Veterans were very much under appreciated and often times treated badly. Richard and Tom wanted to see that all Veterans be recognized and appreciated for their service.
In late 2015, ‘Run for the Vets’ organization was created to be the vehicle for an annual event. Tom and Richard came to the conclusion that a 5K Run for Veterans would be very appropriate, purposeful, and give meaning to both the Veteran and the Run/Walk participant.
The runner bib states ‘I’m running in honor of ________’, with the Veteran’s name written on the bib. Running simply for ‘America’ is also a great reason to join the Run for the Vets event.
In recent years, Kami Christensen, a daughter of a Vietnam Veteran, has become a vital member of the Run for the Vets Committee.
This year will mark the 8th anniversary of the Run/Walk for the Vets event. Individuals of all ages participate in this event and it continues to grow in numbers each year. We invite everyone to come and honor Veterans and celebrate America.
